Women entrepreneurs get boost from family

Filipinas are good entrepreneurs, a recent study disclosed. For every 10 women, six of them experienced success in their first attempts as entrepreneurs Also, six in 10 women entrepreneurs from Metro Manila, Pampanga and Bulacan said that family was their number one consideration before hanging their own shingles, while money as incentive only ranked third in their hierarchy of values.

The study, which was funded by Let’s Go Foundation and GE Money Bank, focused on women who are engaged in business for at least two years.

“This presentation focuses primarily on the results of the survey on growing entrepreneurs,” said Francisco M. Berbardo 3rd, founder of Let’s Go Foundation.

Thirty of the respondents are engaged in food business and manufacturing, while 12 people said they are in retailing.

The study also revealed that 38 percent of “growing” women entrepreneurs are in the 30-39 age group.

“Surprisingly, more than half of them remain single,” Bernardo said.

The study showed that 65 percent of women entrepreneurs had worked in a private corporation before putting up their own business.

Bernardo added that their training and experience from the private sector have been most useful in their enterprise in the first two years.

The study also revealed that majority or 53 percent of the respondents grew up with entrepreneurial parents.

When asked what area of the study they found as the most useful in their business, 31 percent of the respondents said finance while 26 percent answered marketing.

“Human resource management, financial planning, budgeting and competitor analysis are their serious problems, ” Bernardo confirmed.

He stressed that as part of the curriculum in college, students should undergo on-the-job training form day one order to gain experience and training that will expose them to corporate system and procedures.

Bernardo noted that networking skill is important in the early training of a prospective entrepreneur.
